Question: How do I import a TMX memory in Wordfast?

Answer: There is no function/button/menu option labelled 'Import TMX' in Wordfast Classic ,Wordfast Pro or Wordfast Anywhere. However, they support the TMX format (as long as it is valid):

  • in Wordfast Classic: copy the TMX memory you want to use in any folder, then use the Select TM button to open it: it will be converted on-the-fly to the native Wordfast format and a file with the same name, but the .TXT extension will be created in the same folder.
  • in Wordfast Pro: copy the TMX memory you want to use in any folder, then select Translation Memory > New/Select TM > Add TM; it will be converted on-the-fly to the native Wordfast format and a file with the same name, but the .TXT extension will be created in the same folder.[1]
  • in Wordfast Anywhere: In the configuration dialog box (Setup) under 'Use my TMs and glossaries' just click on the Upload or Merge button. it will be converted on-the-fly to the native Wordfast format.

If -for some reason- Wordfast (Classic or Pro) cannot open a given TMX memory, you can use Olifant, a free TM editor (Windows only) that supports the Wordfast format:

  • Open the TMX file in Olifant via File > Open (or File > Import)
  • Convert the memory to the Wordfast format via File > Save as (or File > Export).[2]

Please note Wordfast (Classic/Pro/Anywhere) can only open Wordfast memories and TMX memories. If you need to open a Trados TXT memory, see How to open a Trados TXT memory in Wordfast?
