To use Machine Translation, go to '''''Edit menu > Preferences > Machine Translation''''', and select the MT provider you prefer.

WorldLingo is the only out-of-the-box free provider. You need to obtain an API to use the other ones (see links when you click on “Enable…”). The Microsoft Translator API is free for up to 2 million characters per month.

Tick the options “Allow all unedited segments in active document to be leveraged with MT” to use MT when there is no TM match. Your primary MT result will be automatically leveraged in the target segment.

Q. Help! I can't open Powerpoint files in Wordfast Pro 5.3 (and above)?

This is a known bug but is beyond Wordfast’s control. It should only affect users on Mac High Sierra and above (10.13.2) whose primary interface language does not match their regional settings.

However, there is a workaround! Go to your '''Language & Region settings''' and make sure the region “matches” your primary language. For example, if your primary language is French, select France as the region. If this fails, set your region to United States.

Q. How can I import a PDF file for translation?

As of version 5.7, Wordfast Pro 5 for Mac comes bundled OCR software used to convert PDF files. However, if the conversion fails, we recommend the following alternatives, both of which are free:
# Create an account as [www.freetm.com] and upload your file there. Wordfast Anywhere will convert the PDF into an editable Word document that you can then download and translate in Wordfast Pro 5. Don’t panic! There are a couple of workarounds.
This error is generally caused by not replicating tags from source to target. Run Transcheck on the file (Review tab in TXLF Editor) to check for tag errors first. If this does not fix the problem, the error may have been caused by merging or splitting segments or by adding underline tags to target that don’t exist in source (known bug, being fixed as of 2017-03-04). Perform the following steps:
# Go to '''''Quick Tools''''' and perform a pseudo-translation of the source file (click on the Help icon under the '''''Help''''' tab and go to the '''''Quick Tools > Pseudo Translate''''' section to see how to do this). This performs a roundtrip to see if the file filter is corrupt (if this fails, you’ll have to contact tech support).

This error may be caused if either the local TM or glossary editor is open in the project. To find out if you have an open TM or glossary editor, click on the '''''Wordfast 5''''' tab in the top left corner. If an editor is not greyed out, it means that it is open. Click on it to be brought to the open editor, then click on the lower of two X’s in the top righthand corner to close the editor.

This error could also appear if you are basing a project on a previous project that was created using an earlier version of Wordfast Pro 5 (or 4). If this is the case, attempt to recreate the project from scratch.

===“A Java Runtime Environment (JRE) or Java Development Kit (JDK) must be available in order to run WF PRO. No Java virtual machine was found after searching the following locations: jre\bin\javaw.exe.”===

The issue is with your Antivirus Avast (or other antivirus software) moving the file ''javaw.exe'' to quarantine.

Open the antivirus software to find the file in '''''Quarantine''''' and restore it. Then add it to the list of exclusions so it will be skipped during the next antivirus check.

Why my progress bar never reaches 100 percent

This is very likely due to the fact that you have unedited fuzzy matches or unedited machine translation (MT) matches in your document. In order to move the progress bar, unedited fuzzy or MT matches need to be "verified" using the '''''Verify Segment''''' icon under the '''''Translation''''' tab, its shortcut, or by clicking on the green check mark in the far right column of the segment.

A. There a few workarounds to resolve this problem:

# If you use 7-zip (PC) or the Unarchiver (Mac), you can unzip<ref>Thanks to Samuel for the tip!</ref> the PowerPoint file (if it is a PPTX file), and then you can look in the "media" subfolder to see if there are any large files (e.g. images or videos). Wordfast Pro 5 has not yet implemented an Excel import wizard. Until this is done, you have three options when importing Excel files for translation.

Here is a list of extraction options that can be selected or deselected:

* Skip cells with formulas
* Skip hidden rows or columns
* Treat numbers stored in text format as real numbers, which means they won't be extracted since numbers are non-translatable.
* Translate data validation comments
* Translate hidden sheets

* Translate dropdown lists
* Extract cells in column order (segment ordering would be A1, A2, A3, B1, B2, B3 as opposed to A1, B1, A2, B2, A3, B3)

Translating Excel Files with Wordfast Pro

Wordfast Pro 5 has not yet implemented an Excel import wizard. Until this is done, you have three options when importing Excel files for translation.

== Extract all content for translation ==

This is the default setting of the Excel filter. Simply add an Excel file to a project and all of its content will be extracted for translation.

== Modify the Excel filter or the file to specify content for translation ==

Before importing your Excel file, you can modify the default Excel filter (XLS and/or XLSX) in the Wordfast Pro 5 '''''Preferences > Project Preferences > Filters'' '''to specify the content that needs to be extracted for translation. You may also want to pre-process the Excel file before importing. For example, you might be asked not to translate certain sheets but your client has not hidden them for you.
Here is a list of extraction options that can be selected or deselected:
* Extract sheet names
* Skip cells with formulas
* Skip hidden rows or columns
* Treat numbers stored in text format as real numbers, which means they won't be extracted since numbers are non-translatable.
* Translate data validation comments
* Translate hidden sheets
* Translate cell comments
* Translate dropdown lists
* Extract cells in column order (segment ordering would be A1, A2, A3, B1, B2, B3 as opposed to A1, B1, A2, B2, A3, B3)
* Extract soft return strategy (set by default to be interpreted as a tag)

== Use an XML configuration file ==

This is definitely the most complex way of specifying content to be extracted for translation. In time, the import wizard will be implemented which can be used instead of this method.
To use an XML configuration file:

== Error while saving the document ==

===“An error occurred while saving the document” or “There was a problem creating the preview file”===

Don’t panic! There are a couple of workarounds.
This error is generally caused by not replicating tags from source to target. Run Transcheck on the file (Review tab in TXLF Editor) to check for tag errors first. If this does not fix the problem, the error may have been caused by merging or splitting segments or by adding underline tags to target that don’t exist in source (known bug, being fixed as of 2017-03-04). Perform the following steps:
# Go to Quick Tools and perform a pseudo-translation of the source file (click on the Help icon under the Help tab and go to the Quick Tools > Pseudo Translate section to see how to do this). This performs a roundtrip to see if the file filter is corrupt (if this fails, you’ll have to contact tech support).
# Go back to the TXLF Editor and commit all segments to the TM using the ''Commit All'' icon under the Translation tab.
# Add a copy of the source file (with a different name) to the project.
# Open the newly added file and use the ''Translate All'' icon on the Translation tab.
# Try to save the translated file by clicking on the ''Save File As Translated'' icon under the File tab.
# If it works, fix fuzzies or no matches caused by unmerged or unsplit segments in this copy of the source file, using ''Concordance Search'' if necessary, then save your file as translated again (overwriting the previous version).

If all of this fails, please submit a tech support request via your user account at wordfast.net.

== Exporting project problems ==

===“This archive contains unclosed entries”===

This error may be caused if either the local TM or glossary editor is open in the project. To find out if you have an open TM or glossary editor, click on the Wordfast 5 tab in the top left corner. If an editor is not greyed out, it means that it is open. Click on it to be brought to the open editor, then click on the lower of two X’s in the top righthand corner to close the editor.

This error could also appear if you are basing a project on a previous project that was created using an earlier version of Wordfast Pro 5 (or 4). If this is the case, attempt to recreate the project from scratch.

== Error when starting Wordfast ==

===“A Java Runtime Environment (JRE) or Java Development Kit (JDK) must be available in order to run WF PRO. No Java virtual machine was found after searching the following locations: jre\bin\javaw.exe.”===

The issue is with your Antivirus Avast (or other antivirus software) moving the file javaw.exe to quarantine.

Open the antivirus software to find the file in Quarantine and restore it. Then add it to the list of exclusions so it will be skipped during the next antivirus check.

Why my progress bar never reaches 100 percent

This is very likely due to the fact that you have unedited fuzzy matches or unedited machine translation (MT) matches in your document. In order to move the progress bar, unedited fuzzy or MT matches need to be "verified" using the ''Verify Segment'' icon under the ''Translation'' tab, its shortcut, or by clicking on the green check mark in the far right column of the segment.

Q. I've started running into a slowdown problem… even copying the source takes a few seconds. It's almost as if the program is running short of memory. How can I speed things up?

A. There are several quick fixes to resolve this problem:

# Make sure you are using the Hunspell spell checker and not Microsoft Word (PC-only). The use of the Microsoft Word spell checker can slow down WFP5 to the point of frequent freezing. Modify this setting by going to Wordfast Pro > Preferences > Spellchecker.
# If you have the "spell check as you type" option active, disable it. This could cause slowdown issues, especially with large files. Furthermore, best practices dictate that spell checking should be done during the revision phase and not the translation phase. You save time by using "change all" for frequently misspelled words and don't break your translation flow by constant spelling error interruptions. You can disable it by going to Wordfast Pro > Preferences > Spellchecker.
# Try disabling term highlighting. Go to Wordfast Pro > Preferences > Terminology and uncheck the option that says "Enable term highlighting as you type", as in this screenshot http://prntscr.com/b9qid1
# If you are saving TMs, glossaries, or projects to a back-up or synchronisation folder such as Dropbox or Google Drive, this can take up a lot of computer memory because it is constantly re-syncing the files. Put the service on pause while working on your translation.
# Try disabling Show Whitespace Characters by clicking on the icon under the Edit Tab in the TXLF Editor. This improves the speed of the TXLF Editor.
# On a very large Word file with images, [https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Reduce-the-file-size-of-a-picture-8db7211c-d958-457c-babd-194109eb9535 compress all images] in the source document, save it as a copy, translate the copy, then use Analyze in Quicktools or from the Current Project view to pre-translate the original source file.

== Wordfast Pro 5 won’t open large Powerpoint files ==

Q. I have a very large Powerpoint file and it is crashing Wordfast when I try to import it. What can I do?

A. There a few workarounds to resolve this problem:

# Submit a feedback ticket via the Help icon as soon as possible.
# If you use 7-zip (PC) or the Unarchiver (Mac), you can unzip<ref>Thanks to Samuel for the tip!</ref> the PowerPoint file (if it is a PPTX file), and then you can look in the "media" subfolder to see if there are any large files (e.g. images or videos). Once you have identified them, open the source file, select the images that are over 1 MB and under '''File''', use the '''Compress Pictures…''' option to make them smaller (choose the smallest value, e.g. ''Email 96 ppi''). Remove any videos. Translate in Wordfast. Once you have your target file Powerpoint file, open it and replace compressed images with original images (from the unzipped folder) and re-add embedded video.
# Hack the .INI file on PC (instructions coming soon). This file allocates memory to Wordfast and you can increase it manually.

Mac-related issues in Wordfast Pro

Q. Help! I can't open Powerpoint files in Wordfast Pro 5.3 (and above)?

This is a known bug but is beyond Wordfast’s control. It should only affect users on Mac High Sierra and above (10.13.2) whose primary interface language does not match their regional settings.

However, there is a workaround! Go to your Language & Region settings and make sure the region “matches” your primary language. For example, if your primary language is French, select France as the region. If this fails, set your region to United States.

Q. How can I import a PDF file for translation?

As of version 5.7, Wordfast Pro 5 for Mac comes bundled OCR software used to convert PDF files. However, if the conversion fails, we recommend the following alternatives, both of which are free:
# Create an account as www.freetm.com and upload your file there. Wordfast Anywhere will convert the PDF into an editable Word document that you can then download and translate in Wordfast Pro 5. We recommend opening the converted file and editing the formatting and layout before importing for translation in Wordfast Pro 5.
# Send your PDF to wordcount@wordfast.com and specify the source language (in English) in the subject of your email. Wordfast will send you an editable Word document in addition to a word count by email within minutes if not seconds. For more information about this free service, please see [http://www.wordfast.com/word-count this page] on our website.

If you have to handle PDF files regularly or receive complicated PDF files, we recommend purchasing dedicated OCR software.

Q. My Mac won't let me install Wordfast because it was not downloaded from the App store or is not an identified developer. What can I do?

Newer versions of Mac OS (namely on MacBook Air) removed the option allowing you to install apps downloaded from ”Anywhere” in the Security & Privacy section of the System Preferences.
